(Cisco routers contain many fault diagnosis and troubleshooting tools, but this chapter focuses on the situation that the network cannot use these tools for analysis, including the detection of physical layer faults in the WAN and the analysis of high-level protocols and packets in the LAN. This chapter discusses several different types of testing tools. It includes network management tools and how to use network management tools to diagnose, solve and avoid network failures, and explain the differences between network monitoring and network management. It is worth mentioning that this chapter will also discuss the simplenetworkmanagementprotocol (SNMP), as well as the network management software packages and platforms based on this protocol.
